Relocation or moving is dramatic enough for adults, how much more for children. Moving to a new state or city can be stressful for kids. As a parent, you should be able to find ways to help your children cope with your move.
With a bit of planning, you can minimize the trauma of relocating your children from their old home to a strange house. Letting them get involved with the preparations and packing helps ease the tension and anxiety brought about by relocation.

Here are helpful tips on preparing children for relocation:
1. Begin the move with an explanation to your children why it is necessary. Keep in mind that each child's reaction will be different, thus you should provide an open environment for them to express their feelings. Listen closely to what they have to say and respond accordingly.
2. Introduce your kids to the new home by providing maps, photos, information on the new school and community website. Provide specific information regarding entertainment, local schools and neighborhood opportunities. Get your children to join the investigation of the area. This way, they may feel excited about the move.
3. Before moving, plan a going-away party for your children. Invite all their friends and ask them to bring along a piece of advice for your kid for his or her first day at the new school.
4. It would be preferable to time your move during summer when school is out to make it easier for children to adjust to a new school. If it is not possible, try asking a close friend or relative to temporarily house them until school ends.
5. Assume that all children's clothes, toys, furniture and other belongings would be put in boxes and be taken to the new home. Walk around your home with your kids and have them point out things and tell them that their things will be going to the new house. This is extremely important for very young children who have no idea of what is going on.
6. Let kids choose their most precious items so they will have the comforting feeling that they can access these familiar things any time while everything else is removed.
7. Make the relocation fun by planning on spending one night in a hotel with an indoor pool and go to kid-friendly restaurants for meals, watch a movie together or go roller skating.
8. Find something good, new and different about the new home or town and play it up. Try to look for a home with a recreation room or buy a trampoline for a bigger backyard. You could also sign up the kids for classes at the Children's Theater. Give their new place something that their old home did not have.
9. Before you fix up your new home, let your children redecorate their rooms first. Allow them to pick out the color of paint for their rooms and choose new bedspreads. Having a place they can call their own will do wonders in helping them settle in.
10. As soon as you arrive in your new place, begin exploring with your children. This way, your children will feel like they are on vacation.
